Dear HUA Dialogue’s friend:
Despite being stifling, what has happened since the past 18 months remains an undoubtedly inevitable topic for us.
In late 2019 and early 2020, a new-type disease, later called Covid-19, quietly swept every corner of the unprepared world. The virus has put an overwhelming burden on our modern healthcare and medical systems that were once thought to be reliable. In the face of the unprecedented crisis, governments across the world have resorted to various measures to prevent the spread of the virus, ranging from the early days of lockdown, mask mandates, social distancing, to "health codes", "contact-based registration" and vaccine passports. Queries and protests continue to grow as more and more Covid-19 measures come into effect. Both the mask mandate and the vaccine passport have sparked massive protests, resulting in boycotting within the government and objection from the World Health Organization. All of the enquiries and protests raise the same argument around individual freedom and the quarantine requirement.
Proponents believe that mandatory measures like mask mandates, lockdowns and vaccination passports are imperative in the context of COVID-19 pandemic. The maximized public good can be achieved through partially, temporarily sacrificed individual liberty. Opponents, on the other hand, argue that such policies set a precedent for the government to expand its power, depriving individual freedom and spying on citizens. More importantly, it deepens social inequality and widens the wealth gap. How would you interpret this controversy?
What is your quarantine experience in the past year? And what do you think of them? What is your opinion towards disparate COVID-19 measures taken by different countries? If you feel like sharing your perspectives, please join us in our discussion on September 29, 6:30pm. Looking forward to meeting you.
